Umran Malik is a young Indian fast bowler who has been making waves in the domestic circuit and the Indian Premier League (IPL) in recent years. He is known for his raw pace, which has seen him bowl consistently at over 150 kmph. Malik was born on November 22, 1999, in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir. He started playing cricket at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the Jammu and Kashmir age-group teams.
In 2021, Malik made his first-class debut for Jammu and Kashmir against Himachal Pradesh. He took four wickets in the match, including that of opener Prashant Chopra. Malik continued to impress in the domestic circuit, taking 22 wickets in seven matches in the 2021-22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Malik’s performances caught the eye of the IPL franchises, and he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2021 auction for a sum of INR 4 lakh. He made his IPL debut on October 3, 2021, against the Kolkata Knight Riders. He took two wickets in the match, including that of Andre Russell.
Malik finished the 2021 IPL season with four wickets in four matches. He was also impressive in the 2022 IPL season, taking 22 wickets in 14 matches. He was the second-highest wicket-taker for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the season, behind only T. Natarajan.
In July 2022, Malik made his international debut for India in the T20I series against England. He took two wickets in his debut match, including that of Dawid Malan. Malik also played in the ODI series against New Zealand in August 2023, taking three wickets in two matches.
Malik is still a young cricketer, but he has the potential to become a top-class fast bowler in the future. He is quick, bowls a good line and length, and can swing the ball both ways. He is also a good fielder and can bat a bit as well.
